“It’s about men and leadership and helping one another,” said Christopher Guevara, who organizes the Monday night Hoops Ministry events at Living Word Community Church on East Madison Avenue.

“It’s about fellowship, getting to know each other, growing as men and understanding the meaning of brotherhood," he said.

After Guevara's parents died, he turned to a military friend and mentor who helped connect him to the church.

He, Pastor Sammy Medina and fellow parishioner Francisco Perdomo were instrumental in helping produce the recreation nights. Before long, Guevera took the lead.

The men who play reflect on religion, support one another and aim to keep the younger generation away from bad influences.

A few, like Guevara, come from out of town, yet many of the dozens of attendees -- both younger and older -- live in Dumont.

There's no fee to play.

It's become so popular that Guevara is thinking of adding nights.

“Maybe they are not getting that from home, or from school," he said. "When people have problems, we guide them and give them resources, and impact their lives.”
